Self-Editing for Fiction Writers: How to Edit Yourself Into Print

Book Review written by Siobhian R. Hodges
I’ve just finished reading “Self-editing for Fiction Writers” by Renni Browne and Dave King – and I’ve got to say … I loved it!
I’ve read a lot of books about how to write novels but surprisingly this is the first I’ve read about editing. It was such an eye-opener, and by the last page, I truly felt like I’d learnt a lot.
The book is broken down into twelve sections and provides a checklist as well as some editing exercises at the end of each chapter – something I found very useful.
The writing was clear and the examples were well-chosen. There were even a few single-panel cartoons that helped break up the text.
Overall, this book has made me feel more confident with editing my own novels. It has reinforced what I was already familiar with (such as the “show, don’t tell” chapter) and helped me better understand areas I needed more practice in.
I highly recommend this book to any fiction writer. Whether you’re looking to edit your first book, or just need a refresher, Renni Browne and Dave King’s “Self-editing for Fiction Writers” is a must-read.
